★★★★☆How to spot a fake sweepstakes
Real sweepstakes are a fun, low-effort way to maybe win something. Fake ones are designed to harvest your data or your money. The good news: the warning signs are easy to learn.
- It asks for payment to enter. A genuine sweepstakes is always free — “no purchase necessary” is a legal requirement in most places.
- There are no rules or sponsor. Legit draws name the sponsor, the prize, the eligibility, and the end date. If those are missing, walk away.
- It wants sensitive details up front. You never need bank or card numbers to enter. A name and email is normal; more than that is a red flag.
- You “won” something you never entered. Surprise wins that ask for a “release fee” are a classic scam.
Enter smart
Use a real email address you check — that’s how winners are notified — and consider a dedicated address just for offers.
